Cuttyhunk Island

    A tern in tweezered light
    between storm and storm
    brushes air's whiskered cheek
    resting on the sea's purple-green
    which hides its mystery below:
fins and bones, chits of lemniscus
    breathing water:
    a single hook
    descends.

    Who would not bite
    the tessellated gobbet
    suspended so seductive
    in the purple green --
    only a fin flick from
    knowing?
